Many of these links are a series of malicious archives that use a couple of different but effective techniques to trick the user into clicking on a link (even clicking on the download itself, as was the case with the Windows executable version above). They will then pull a.urlscan file off of the machine and do some scanning, which is why you will sometimes get a notification about "inconsistent file permissions" while downloading.
Downloading from a trusted source is always preferable, since there is less chance of infection. For a Windows executable, there are many good sites. For Linux you can download from the Ubuntu Software Center.

It is possible to make Firefox detect malignant URLs. One such work around is to use the urlscan2 extension which will allow you to either block certain URLs from being visited in Firefox (which should help against drive-by-downloads, since people are less likely to click malicious links if they know they will be blocked by the browser) or just to force Firefox to never attempt to download from malignant URLs.
What you need to do is add urlscan2 (which is a small extension) to the Firefox plugin directory (I'll just assume you're using Windows 7, but it is roughly the same process on any OS). In Firefox, go to Edit > Preferences > Plugins. In the "Available plugins" list, locate the urlscan2 plugin (it's a green flag icon). You will need to click the "Load" button in order for the plugin to be active, and for the extension to be visible in the Firefox toolbar. Now, you can change the URL rules. On the main page, change the URL Rule to "URL containing:" and then enter the URL of the web site you want to block. This should effectively block the bad URLs from loading.
It's also worth pointing out that as of Firefox 4, all of the permissions are "off by default", so you can block a few of the extensions listed in your question without much risk.

Hello. My name is Linky.
I'm 21, I am originally from the West of England, and I have been living in Central London for a few years now, studying and working at Central St Martins in the Fashion Design department. I'm an Art student and I've wanted to become a fashion designer ever since I was in Secondary School.
I'm 16, I've always been really creative. I would love to do some sort of fashion, as I think it's really fun and interesting. But I don't really have any idea what I would like to do, though I have a lot of interests in other things. I love music, art, dancing, street art, travelling, cinema, fashion and all sorts.
I'm 18 years old and I have recently started to take more interest in makeup and fashion. I've been looking into getting my own blog so I can keep up to date with all the new things coming out in the world of make up and fashion. My interest in makeup grew because I used to love it as a kid and when I became interested in makeup again it was a great hobby to start.
I'm 23 and a student in art and philosophy, a make up lover, a theatre lover and a nerd. I love games, books, music, cinema, comics and anime. But I have a whole list of interests.
I'm 21, I'm a semi-professional photographer. I have a book coming out next year and am currently in the middle of my BA in photography, fashion and media at Falmouth University. I'm a make up lover and have been doing it for about 6 years.
